This is a sample itinerary designed for adventurous travelers seeking a true self-drive experience in Uganda. You’ll explore the country’s iconic national parks and lakes at your own pace, combining thrilling wildlife encounters with immersive rooftop camping under the stars. The Prado TX comes fully equipped with all necessary camping gear, including a durable rooftop tent, high-density foam mattress, sleeping bags, pillows, camp chairs and table, portable gas stove with cookware and utensils, cooler box, LED lights, and basic first-aid kit – everything you need for comfortable, independent camping without extra hires.

3 Days in Murchison Falls NP

Pick up your fully equipped Toyota Land Cruiser Prado TX in Kampala early on Day 1 and drive north on smooth tarmac (approximately 305 km, 5–6 hours) through rolling hills and along the Nile, descending into the Albertine Rift Valley. Arrive in the late afternoon, complete park entry, and set up your rooftop tent at a savanna campsite near Paraa or the Delta area. Over the next three days you will enjoy early-morning game drives on the northern bank spotting elephants, giraffes, buffalo, Uganda kob, and possibly lions or leopards; an afternoon boat cruise along the Victoria Nile towards the thunderous Murchison Falls, watching crocodiles, hippos, and prolific birdlife; and a short guided hike to the top-of-the-falls viewpoint to witness the Nile squeezing through the narrow gorge. Each evening you return to camp, cook on your portable gas stove, and relax in your rooftop tent under the stars with the sounds of the African bush all around.

2 Days in Kibale Forest National Park

After breakfast on departure day from Murchison, pack up your rooftop tent and drive southwest (approximately 250–300 km, 6–7 hours via Hoima and Fort Portal) through beautiful rift-valley escarpments and rural landscapes to Kibale Forest National Park. Arrive in the late afternoon, enter the park, and set up camp at a forest-edge site. Over your two full days here you will rise early for an unforgettable chimpanzee tracking trek through the dense rainforest with habituated groups, followed by a guided walk in the nearby Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary for more primates and excellent birdwatching. Use the final morning for a relaxed forest walk or crater-lake exploration before packing up and heading south. All nights are spent high in your rooftop tent listening to the calls of the tropical rainforest.

3 Days in Queen Elizabeth National Park

From Kibale you drive south (short 2–3 hour journey) and arrive mid-afternoon to begin your three days in Queen Elizabeth National Park. Set up your rooftop tent at a savanna campsite near Mweya and immediately head out on an afternoon game drive across the Kasenyi plains for elephants, buffalo, antelopes, and lions. The following two days are packed with more game drives through open savanna and crater lakes, a relaxing boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel spotting huge pods of hippos, Nile crocodiles, and elephants at the water’s edge, plus a full day in the remote Ishasha sector searching for the famous tree-climbing lions lounging in fig trees along with topi and buffalo herds. Each evening you cook dinner with your onboard kitchen gear and enjoy sunset views from your rooftop tent.

2 Days in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

After breakfast, pack up and drive southeast from Queen Elizabeth (approximately 3–4 hours through stunning highlands and tea plantations) to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Arrive in the afternoon, complete formalities, and set up camp at a community or park-edge site near Buhoma or Ruhija. Over your two days you will enjoy the highlight experience of a full-day mountain gorilla trek (permit pre-booked), hiking through misty rainforest with rangers to spend one magical hour with a habituated family. The second morning is perfect for a short forest walk or community visit before departing. Evenings are spent preparing meals on your portable stove and relaxing in your rooftop tent in the cool highland air.

2 Days at Lake Bunyonyi

From Bwindi you take the short scenic drive (1–2 hours) to Lake Bunyonyi and arrive in the afternoon to set up your rooftop tent at a lakeside campsite overlooking the terraced hills and islands. Over the next two days you will enjoy a full day of leisure: renting a canoe to paddle between lush islands, spotting numerous bird species, swimming in the bilharzia-free waters, and simply relaxing by the shore. Evenings are spent cooking lakeside meals with your camping kitchen and stargazing from your rooftop tent with panoramic highland views.

2 Days in Lake Mburo National Park

After a relaxed breakfast, drive northeast from Lake Bunyonyi to Lake Mburo National Park (approximately 4–5 hours). Arrive in the afternoon and set up camp at a lakeside or savanna site, then head out for an afternoon game drive or boat safari spotting zebras, impalas, elands, giraffes, and buffalo. On your final morning enjoy a walking safari or another game drive for last wildlife sightings before packing up your rooftop tent mid-morning and driving back to Kampala (approximately 3–4 hours). Drop off the Prado TX in the afternoon and conclude your unforgettable 14-day self-drive rooftop camping adventure.
