The Toyota Rav4 still stands as the most preferred car rental choice for budget travelers on self-drive road trips in Uganda. The Toyota Rav4 is a popular compact SUV that offers a blend of versatility, comfort, and reliability.
The Rav4s have gone through several generations since its introduction in 1994. Each generation has brought improvements in design, features, and performance. Uganda being a developing country, at Car Hire Uganda we still stick to the older generations (between 1995 and 2005) because of their efficiency on poorly maintained roads and simplicity in fixing them by our local mechanics in case of an emergency on the road.
Rental Rates:
Compared to larger SUVs, the Rav4 is relatively more affordable to rent, making it a cost-effective choice for travelers on a budget. The rental cost of our Rav4’s are not always fixed at $45 per day as they can go up or down depending on a number of conditions mainly the area of use and rental duration. Please not that we don’t always take self-drive bookings for rentals below 4 days. Here is our pricing summary.
- $45 per day in Uganda for rentals between 4 – 9 days.
- $40 per day for rentals of 10 days or more.
- $1200 for a monthly rental basis.
If you need extras like a driver or camping gear, we would charge you a small extra fee of $40 and $10 per day respectively.

Good interior
The interior of our Rav4s boasts a well-designed interior with comfortable seating for the front seats, however, the back seats do not provide enough legroom for taller passengers that sometimes makes it ideal for couples. Depending on it’s size, it offers a good amount of headroom for both front and rear passengers, along with a versatile cargo area (boot space) for hauling luggage and other items such as camping gear.
Economical & Money saver
Our Rav4s are typically available with old model gasoline engines of 1900cc that are renowned for their respectable fuel efficiency, offering a balance of power, performance and economy. Engine options may vary depending on the model year and region however, recent engines (between 2008 till this year) have not worked well for safari road trips in Uganda due to their high level of maintenance required in un predictable climatic conditions and dusty roads. Meanwhile, the exact fuel economy will depend on the engine, transmission, and driving conditions but the standard is between 9km and 13km per litre.
Toyota Rav4 Limitations
As it is with a common saying African saying that ‘even the most beautiful woman has a flaw’, the Toyota RAV4 is accompanied with certain restrictions including the following.
Mileage Restriction
While the RAV4 is capable of handling various road conditions, some remote areas in Uganda may have challenging terrain, including unpaved roads, potholes, or uneven surfaces. Off-road driving requires skill and caution, and it’s crucial to assess your driving capabilities and the condition of the roads before venturing into more remote areas. For this reason, the Toyota Rav4s are restricted to some areas for instace;
- In Uganda, we always don’t allow Rav4’s to go to Kidepo National park, in the North Eastern Uganda. This remote destination has dirt roads that connect to it and during wet seasons, the soil texture in the region makes a mid-sized SUV like a Rav4 not suitable. The soils tend to be slippery even on the lowest amount of drizzles that increases chances of skidding off the tracks easy.
- In East Africa, we only rent Rav4s to Uganda and Rwanda and highly restrict some parts of Kenya and all regions around the Serengeti in Tanzania. The corrugated roads leaves the underbody of a small car like Rav4 shattered to tatters.
Limited Seating Capacity
As earlier mentioned, the Rav4 can accommodate up to three passengers only in comfortable seating positions, which may not be suitable for larger groups or families. The space between the front and back seats is small that limits the legroom for behind passengers.
Limited Storage Space: Due to its compact size, the Rav4 has limited cargo space, which can be a drawback if you have a lot of luggage or equipment.
No support for Rooftop Tents: It’s important to note that the rented Rav4s do not support rooftop tents, limiting travelers on budget that don’t like ground tents to enjoy the camping adventure.

Toyota Rav4 rentals are one of the most popular in Uganda on self drive travelers.
